Appalachia the Place

The Appalachian Mountains are among the oldest mountains in the world.  The backbone of those mountains stretches more than 1500 miles across 13 states:

 2. Maryland
 3. New York
 4. Ohio
 5. West Virginia
 6. Virginia
 7. Kentucky
 8. Tennessee
 9. North Carolina
 10. South Carolina
11. Georgia
12. Alabama
13. Mississippi

When we talk about our Appalachian culture, we are talking more about our Southern Appalachian Mountains and the states that are in bold print above.  That area is highlighted in green on the map page of A is for Appalachia!  The Alphabet Book of Appalachian Heritage.
